My son and lovely d-i-l have been to see us today and my son has always been keen on electronics and anything that revolves round the subject plus he designs a lot of stuff that has been put on the net.
Anyway we were talking about how things have changed over the years and I was flabbergasted when he said that he still had the first radio that hubby and I had when we first married.
It was in his workshop AND its still going strong.
This makes the radio well over 60 years old.
He has sent me this picture and I said it looks as though it could do with a polish and dusting but as he said its in a workshop so you can expect it to have dust on it. Still going strong. Smiley4

Its certainly stood the test of time. How bulky they were then to the slimline models of today.

It's certainly looking good for it's age, and how surprised you must have been to know your Son still had it.. Very Happy

A bit like my old Etronic twin speaker that I had in my bedroom as a teenager tune to the American Forces Network Germany.

That IS an Etronic radio Nordog.

Many thanks for getting back to me folks.
I have had my orders from the family that I must not throw anything out before they see it. Laughing
Funnily enough I have been knitting and had all my knitting needles out to find the size I wanted. While sitting and drinking her tea my d-i-l spotted what she thought was a long darning needle on the carpet. When she picked it up it was one of my knitting needles that I had missed picking up and putting in my needle case when sorting them out.
I said "Oh I must not lose that because I have had my orders from you all not to throw things out that are old and that is one of the needles I knitted balaclavas with during WW2." If we have any knitters here it was size 14 UK sizing or 2mm metric sizing.

I am trying hard to think of the radio I remember as a child that my Mum and Dad had, it was much narrower and the buttons and dials were on the top, the front part was like the mesh style on your lovely radio there Maisie..

Follow those orders well then, do as you are asked, even if it is an item the size of a thimble. chuckles

I bet those that received the balaclava's that you made were very grateful to you, in keeping them so warm while out there at War..

That is amazing and in such good condition Maisie. I can just about remember the one we had but it's long gone now.

Well I am surprised to see that indirectly there is another enthusiastic maintainer of an old valve radio. Very good to see that and to know it is still in working condition.
Just out of interest there is a chap down in Worthing West Sussex who specialises in repair and servicing these old valve radio's and has an extremely interesting website where he details all his work, including a number of video presentations of his work.
I came across his website while looking for a bit more information regarding your radio Maisie, and finished up spending over half an hour looking round his site and only touched the surface.
Here is the website of The Radio Workshop.

Well I never Maisie, I thought mine was unique to me until like Nev did some site seeing on the web. I have seen that web sight Nev and I too was there for ages. I thought most old valve radio set were Bush, Philips, Vidor PYE etc or Grundig.

Gosh Maywalk, knitting on that size needle you would of needed some very fine wool, a 2ply or 3 and plenty of patients.

Hi Cat

Yes it was 2ply yarn and for the back and front of a ladies jumper I would have to cast on over 200 stitches. Took me ages to knit a garment.
