Post by Maywalk on Mon Jun 11, 2012 4:50 am

I had a great afternoon yesterday at the re-enactors WW2 show.

At one stage I had quite a few listening to my evacuee story because a train was shunting through with children dressed as evacuees with their gasmasks and my lovely d-i-l said to me "Does that bring back memories?".
This in turn was taken up by a bystander who heard what she said and he asked me if I had been an evacuee. By this time I had an audience of around 12 people listening to every word. They thanked me for telling them about those years and my hand was aching with being shaken so much.

I only wish I could have stopped longer but my son had to get back to pick my granddaughter up from Nottingham.

Worth the effort to go and see all the ladies dressed up in their 40s gear and with prams of that era BUT they do need to learn how to put a turban on.
There was a fashion show relating to the 40s clothes plus a jitterbugging event which got my old pins wanting to join in. There were also quite a few 1940s cars there which was lovely to see apart from a Spitfire which I had to go and stroke because if it wasn't for them coming to our aid when being machine gunned on the evacuee train I would NOT be here now to tell the tale.

Altogether a VERY enjoyable time.

Such a lovely day for sure our Maisie, so many enjoying all that was there, seeing wonderful memories and hearing your story too, they all will not forget their visit there, as you won't as well..

So much went into all the planning there for the weekend, well done to all the organisers. :clap10: .

Thanks Tan.
It was great to see all the effort put into everything. They even had someone dressed as a German Officer and there were many laughs as I went by and lifted my arm up saying Heil Hitler with a capital S. chuckles

Yes it was Honeybee and I only wish my granddaughter could have been with me because she is the one studying photography. She would have loved some of the models.
Unfortunately she was working and that is why we had to leave the show fairly early because she had to be picked up from the workplace which was app: 20 odd miles away.

I was thinking while you were all there enjoying everything around, and getting into many memory modes too from those times, or for many who had heard about it all from close relatives, how you must have thought when coming away again to go home to get back into this century mode.

Bit like say going to the Cinema for the afternoon, seeing maybe a film that was filmed in the winter, only to come out in the brightness of the sunshine, it would take a little while to adapt again.

I must admit Tan that I wasn't looking forward to going home AND I felt really sad to think I was going to miss the flypast.
Having said that I still think I am lucky to have a lovely family who were willing to take me even though it was only for a few hours.
This may sound bitchy but it gave me a break from my hubby because being with each other for 24 hours a day can have its drawbacks.
We both need a bit of ME time no matter how long we have been married.

It really was so lovely, and very thoughtful of your family to take you there, such a wonderful time they knew you would have, and certainly did as well.

Everyone, no matter how close, or how happy they are, need that 'me' time, it does us all the world of good too, then of course there is something different to talk about when going home, as being together 24/7 each know what has gone on in the day.

So pleased you had a lovely time and thoroughly enjoyed it too our Maisie.. hug

I bet the Vera Lynn style singing was so lovely, and the dancing displays as well.
Everything though would have been so lovely to see, I imagine then there were a lot of people there.

Yes I must admit I do try and keep the mind active with playing Scrabble and Words on the net with many cyber friends. Apart from doing knitting for charities and any expectant mothers round here.
My fingers are not so agile now to knit big things but I like to keep them going.
