Looking through some old documents that we have aquired over the years from family who have passed on I came across this certificate that was awarded to my m-i-l for 20 years loyal service to the hosiery firm she worked for.

It made me wonder in todays uncertain future whether anyone will be working for that long anywhere to gain a certificate with all the cut backs that are taking place.

This is lovely isn't it our Maisie, a really nice presentation for her dedication there while working, sure your m-i-l felt very proud that she was recognised in this way, and with keeping it too safe too.

Yes, I do, and have quite a few.

Not many will receive those in the future as they move around in their jobs so much now.

I like the lettering on the card.

Yes it is nice June.
Cant bring myself to throw it out although hubby's mother never really took to me. Mainly because I was in her eyes a furriner as they used to call anyone who did not live in the vicinity. Very Happy
Apart from the fact I was TOO straightforward for the family.

Thanks Joelle,
Do any other members have any old documents they would like to share? I love to read anything from years ago especially the handwriting.
Come on folks have a look in your keepsakes to see what you can come up with even if its an old photo.

I have lots but no time to root them out and having no scanner it would mean photographing them all.

You really are the keeper of family treasure, our Maisie - and good for you!

My beloved Glen and I made it well past the 25 year mark with Vancouver city buses and how I hope one of our grandchildren or great grandchildlren will treasure the old bits and pieces of our life as you do, lovely lady.

I've got a few old things and the moment I get a chance, will try to find some to pop in here as I too love old document and old photos and old people and - hoot!!

Hi Mara,
I am extremely lucky to have one or two old documents from my side of the family and if it wasn't for my own mother they would have been lost forever.
This was because when the blitz started in London during WW2 she put many old certificates and such in her handbag and that handbag went everywhere with her. Very Happy
She did not manage to save them all but I appreciate that she did what she could to preserve family history.

It's wonderful she did it, too, Maisie.

I know when I was young, I rarely if ever thought of my family history - partly because they were 'just names and dates' when listening to my parent's conversations. But all one had to do was hand me an old photo album - the older the better - and I could be happily 'lost' for hours!

Here is an old photo Mara.
Taken in 1924 of my eldest brother and sister and my mother. My other brother and I were not born then. Its a bit bombed damaged but still clear enough to see. That was a canvas background with the picture painted on it just to give it a little bit of oomph. Very Happy

Oh Maisie, your Mom was a beautiful lady!!

And your siblings such cuties ... just look at the expression on your sister's face ... sort of like "What is this thing pointing at me??!!" - grin!

Photo like this always mesmerize me ... names and dates don't really stir my soul, but photos certainly do! I've only to look at them and imagine what each was like, what made them laugh or love or cry. Photos are truly magical and how I love you've shared this one with us, Maisie!

This photo is of my Father ... my grandparents settled in the Canadian Prairies (my Grandmother was the first white woman settler in the area way back then) ...

Anyway, horses were everything to them for both work and transportation and each sons was expected to get his team of horses at a minimum - smile.

FANTASTIC Mara.
I loved the photo and the court document.
What a great document to keep.

Have you ever contacted your local museum concerning it?

No, but only because the documents I have are nearly all in reference to events in a different Province, Maisie.

And the little town my grandparents and Father (siblings) is in my 'bad books - sigh.

My grandfather's kilt and all the stuff that went with it ... my grandmother's woolens she brought from Scotland and all her gowns are in their 'museum' now. One room, un-heated and un-air-conditioned ... and unprotected. And all the documents are simply stacked everywhere on stuffed in boxes that haven't been opened for a decade.

Mind you, their tractors and threshing and all the other farm stuff is kept in pristine shape for showing.

This is going to sound horrible, I know, but I should literally have rented a truck last time I was there and 'swiped' all the perishables. My Father didn't donate them to be left to disintegrate. So, yup, they are in my 'bad books'.

My nephew (older than I) is actually in charge of the 'museum' and he honestly couldn't understand why I was upset that not only were all the fabric and associated things left unprotected, the newspapers and people's journals are untouched and unloved too ... and there's no copier there so one can't even 'rescue' them that way.

Sorry about the rant but I, like you, believe it behoves us to protect treasure like this.

Oh Mara,
I am SO sorry.
What on earth is he doing looking after a museum if he does not know how to preserve anything?
I can understand you being upset because I would be the same. Console 10

Wonderful photos and memories Maisie and Mara. I would be the same as you Mara and wish I had kept those treasures myself.

I just have a couple of oldies already on the PC.

The one of your uncle in his full regalia is terrific, June ... but the one of you and your dear Mom, gracious, that is simply adorable!

Here's one from my wee collection that, although not in 'pounds', may at least show how grocery prices have changed ...

Those prices do look very cheap. Especially the meats.

It would be interesting to know the prices in our currency Mara but I am not clever enough to sort that out. Laughing

I have just found another photo of my Uncle who was killed in WW1 and if anyone is interested I will put it on here.
