66 years ago I was in a furniture pantechnicon van with all our belongings and moving back to London from the Midlands. I was in my 17th year.
It was my fathers 47th birthday and after dreadful snow storms in the February this was how it was on the way back. It was upsetting to see SO many dead animals floating about in the floods that had frozen to death during that dreadful winter.
It took us all day to reach London with having to either travel through the floods or making detours miles out of our way on roads that still had icy snow embedded on them. It was dark by the time we got to the house that had been allocated to us after we had been bombed out twice during the London Blitz.

Such a shame having to leave your home there our Maisie, with your family, and at the time of the very bad weather, so much sadness seeing all the devastation there with the animals, and for all who were flooded out there.
All the hard work too needed as it mentioned there about digging the potatoes up, also of course needing to do so very much when all had drained away, repairing the homes, and trying so hard to get back to a form of normality.

Yes it was a tough year Tan because Britain was just getting back on its feet again after the finishing of WW2 in 1945.
We managed though because the typical British bulldog spirit came to the fore, which meant everyone helping each other like they did during the war.

I would have been just over 2 yrs old then and we were also on the move to another house after the evacuee my mum had with her and dad died from flu. and then pneumonia. He was about 8 yrs. old.

Of course our journey wasn't as harrowing because we were moving into the same area but it must have been upsetting for my mum who had me and my baby brother to contend with.

I was three at that time Maywalk so no recollection of the weather, was told of the snow being very deep and have seen the films of steam locos clearing the lines with lots of men digging them out but not much of the flooding aftermath.

It must have been awful during the war to be moved away after losing everything then returning home seeing the suffering and devastation and starting again many do revel in war and dont learn just look around the world to see that but its the innocent folks who suffer there is no glory in it just sadness and loss ,
I heard on the news how many animals are dying now on farms they are suffocating under the snow they are trying to dig them out but its hard to find where they are,
surprise

Yes I have to admit it was ruddy hard for my parents Captain because they lost two homes during the Blitz.
What bit of furniture they had got when we moved back to London was all bought from the second hand shop when evacuated to the Midlands.
