Interesting to see this front page of the newspaper our Maisie. That's good to read there the deaths from TB had been greatly reduced, such a terrible shame of course so many died of it, but marvellous for the mobile units there for as many as could be to have the X-Rays, to at least detect it if anyone has the first signs of the symptoms.

Thanks Tan.
I was unsure whether to put it on the forum or not because not everyone wants to delve into the past. To me its VERY interesting to see how things have changed.

Please feel free to add as you choose our Maisie, everyone has varied likes, and in what they find interesting, I personally like to read about life from the past.
More so these last few years, as I didn't seem to take too much on board before then, so now it is like a catch up time for me, and I so like hearing like from yourself who lived through those times, it's more enjoyable of the past that way to me, than reading a lot in the history books.

All interesting to read our Maisie.
Gosh, the bus driver there really went that extra mile didn't he. Giggle I bet his employer initially thought William was winding him up.

How lovely for the children to travel to France, and to pay their respects to the unknown soldier. I expect families saved very hard to enable their children to go, but well worth it for them all.

Frightening for the watchmen there at the cigarette raid, they must have been petrified with all those overpowering the two of them.
My Uncle and Auntie years and years ago now worked at a cigarette factory in Jersey, 'Chings', they lived in.
One time they were faced with trouble when a noise came late one evening, but my Uncle went out there carrying an iron bar, there were two youngsters that I remember him telling me, they took one look at the iron bar and the anger on my Uncle's face, they ran away. Laughing

That was awful for the Earl and his Daughter in the gale there at that time, good thing the fire was started to attract help.

Yes all fascinating true tales that happened many years ago Tan.
By the way some of the children that went on that trip to France were from the town I was evacuated to.

No I wasn't one of the children Tan.
I left school in 1944.
The school trip was in 1947 but what I meant was that there were some youngsters from Loughborough that were privileged to go.
I had been at work for 3 years by then because we left school at 14 in those days. I was 17 years old when that took place.

That was first printed the year before I was born Maisie, however the price of potatoes were obviously still under government control to some extent as a little bit says prices would be 9 old pence a pound up to April the 24th. With prices actually going down later in the year, wow, I wish that would happen now with things.

That was lovely for them then to go there, and they sure would have enjoyed the experience a lot.

This is wonderful Maisie you often see the large books made up of news print from a certain year My Dad had one from the last War all the headlines and articles I particularly like the adverts as well ,
I read there how thieves robbed a Naafi overcame the Night watchmen and stole 4,000,000 cigarettes I wonder if they were ever caught that is a lot of smokes ,
Thankyou and its always good to look back so dont ever feel folk arnt interested in the War years and since we are living in an incredible time so many things killed many back then through the years and now a trip to the Doctor a few pills and your fixed we cant ever take that for granted and how folks in the recent past suffered slow deaths with the conditions and illness ,

I read this with such interest, our Maisie - and thank you!

My lovely and sweet Uncle John used to live with us when I was little and I have such treasured memories of this dear man plopping me on his lap and letting me brush his hair endlessly - and he always had time for a little girl when she was feeling a tad lonely.

Sadly, he died from TB ... he went into a Sanitarium when I was about 6 and died within months. Even after all these many years, I think of him with such affections and what a horrible disease TB was (and is).

One of the laws here in Canada about it being against the law to spit on a public street was enacted because of TB and the high risk of spreading it from person to person (don't think the law is enforced anymore but although the risk of TB is slight over here, spitting on the sidewalk should warrant a massive kick in the butt!! Grin).

(One thing I have that was a wee unintentional 'gift' from my Uncle John is apparently a wee nodule in one lung that contains TB ... no danger unless I get really ill or run down so I don't give it any thought).

Hi Mara,
Yes its a terrible illness and can affect SO many. It was very sad to see how my s-i-l suffered with it.
I hope that the so called gift from your uncle will remain dormant for the rest of your life Mara. Do you have to go for regular check ups?
Keep well.

I don't go for regular check-ups, I must confess, our Maisie. My beloved sees our family doctor and specialists so often that I honestly have a tendency to forget to mention if my body is having any wee 'hiccups' - grin!
