This is genuinely my first car, the long haired youngster was me at twenty one, my mother took the picture and obviously that was my dad.
The rusty patches were not optional, they came with the car.

I had a toyota conquest loved her to death. 1989 model she was/is so reliablable. My son in law. Had the polo classic standing in his garden. He just cant bring himself to sell the car. He still has the peogeot 304 that he inherited from his gran when he left school. What an amazing car to drive was the peogeot. We just found the parts so expensive. I believe it is so ruted now and will have to be sold as scrap
My son in law wants a caravan. Well truthfully my daughter does. - we can get more for the conquest we have swopped cars. He still has not sold the conquest. So gather it wont be sold.
The one problem I have with the polo is when you reverse- look at the high bom bom of the classic. The boot at the top tilts upwards. I nearly wrote off a supermarket trolley that someone had just pushed behind the car the other day.

In 2003. I bought a VW beetle 1970 model lime green
I saw it in the visitors parking, It did not move stayed in the same parking month after month. I eventually found someone in the Traffic department to trace the owner through the number plate.
They not allowed to give phone numbers. But we pulled some strings. After chatting to the owner of the car, he said. He had been meaning to fetch it. I said OK I will give you R2000. Agreed and someone here helped bwana they cleaned the spark plugs and jump started it and first kick it started.
I drove it as a little run about for years loved it. Then oneday on the way home from the shops no acceleration. I got out... kapoof petrol pipe had come loose and engine on fire. I grabbed the cushion I was sitting on, that caught fire. One man stopped and said stand back and just let her burn out. Some pedestrians were walking by and there was loose sand where I had cruised onto a verge. they threw it into the engine The flames were now heading for the backseat... Sand killed the fire. A guy even climbed in to save the battery not sure why. I just grabbed my bag
Some beetle fanatic who modifies beetles bought car for R1700.
Oh I loved the sound of the engines... would buy another one tomorrow if I had a chance or the money

The VW beetles - too cute!! Our daughter swears by VW but the 'bug' had to go once her family started - but can surely understand why you loved your happy lime green one, Honeybee! (Did you keep a fresh flowers in that tiny vase on dash?).

About twenty years ago, I bought a very rusty and old Ford Escort MK2, for very little cash. The engine, gearbox, and general mechanics of it were in good condition as it wasn't of very high mileage, maybe only about 30,000 miles on the clock.
But the story was that a previous owner had driven it onto a beach as somewhere to park it. The tide came in and swamped it, filling all the chassis box sections with salty sea water and a small amount of sand. That started the rust a bit too early in its life.
So I borrowed my dads garage, and an electrical supply from the people my dad rented the garage from, bought a MIG welding set and set too to replace all the rusted mess. It took several weeks, a complete replacement of all the floor, some of the box section, and a lot of patience, but I rebuilt it.
During that time, some guys in a neighbouring garage were well into doing up old VW Beetles, so as well as welding up my car, I was also doing a bit of welding for them too. I was surprised though at how well the main frame of the beetle was put together, and how solid the steel was, even if I did have to replace a big chunk of it on one car.

Twelve months later I sold it on after my father passed away, and took over what had been his car. As far as I know it went on for another few years till the MOT regulations were tightened up regarding welded repairs. At the time it was acceptable to copy the original spot welding technique that had built the car, however the new regulations stated that any welded repairs had to be a continuous weld, and not in spots, which was the way I had done it. The result now is cars with welded repairs, are actually stronger than when first built, because of the need for a continuous weld around any metal replaced.
Needless to say, any welded repair I do now follows the regulations.

Oh, how sad your Dad did, Nev! I don't care what age we are, when our parents die it's horrible and when both are gone, we're orphans - gentle sigh.

How I admire anyone who can do this type of 'hands on' thing - truly! Good for you! (Any photos by any chance? Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 2 Icon_biggrin )

Very nice and I bet you travelled far in it too!..

My dad years back bought a transit van, cut for the windows, fitted an opening roof and made it into a caravanette, he loved it and they would travel around a lot!..

Honeybee those Beetles sort of chuffed and tweeted very distinctive , but you did very well on the deal and maybe you will one day have another , do you like the newer Beetles i think they are all golf running gear but really are still expensive to buy, they also have a little glass vase in the Dash for a flower

My very first car was one of these the same colour and a van as well ,i had always had Motorbikes to this time and i could drive this thing with a full motorbike licence as then i couldnt drive a car , so in effect i was on the road with not having driven before and learning quickly in one of these it was blooming awful how i got in it i dont know but it was dry and warm and soon after i was looking forward to getting a proper car my Brother said get one with all the wheels

Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 2 DSC00017

Then soon after i got my driving test passed i got a Datsun 160b like this loads of chrome and rust i had it a few months but had some fun in it when driving you couldnt open a window as for some reason it started to fill with smoke and fumes i suspect there were holes in the floor Very Happy

I had a red one and then a green one then a blue one and had her 17 years
but i didnt drive her much she was in the garage being polished and shown the daylight on nice days it was supposede to be my car for when i retired but my heaqlth started to go and it wasnt to be ,
I also bought and loved a ford Granada, it was a 2.8 litre and several of us had them at work it was fast and solid and so smooth and comfy but was also very thirsty even when petrol was £1 a gallon it was still costing me £30 a week for petrol but one of the last of Fords big comfy cars

Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 2 Ford-granada-ghia-2

Then i had a Sierra another ford it was an estate and a very nice car a 2 litre so better on fuel but i had it for about 4 years

I have mentioned before that I had a three wheeler, two in fact, the first because my ex MRS had a motorbike license only, but the first was exactly the same as your Captain the Reliant Regal van, the second was a true car and was the Robin.
Before then though and even after I had a few Capri's and also the good old rock and roller Cortina's, two markIII's a mark II and a mark IIII, the mark IIII was the best in my opinion for handling, the earlier models used to roll and sway into bends. I also had two Ford Anglias, I liked Fords in those days, really easy to work on and repair, even the later Escort I mentioned earlier.
I have also had Vauxhalls and Austins, the first time to go foreign made was the Peugeot 205 I got rid of last year for this Ka I have now.

(My Father insisted that I could not date any boy that showed up driving his parent's station wagon ... silly dear man!).

Bet it was such fun to 'be free' and drive your Triump Herald 1250 - sunroof open, windows down and radio on - aah, bliss!
