This is a lovely Nostalgic thing to talk about and have you ever wondered where they all are now , i once had an Austin Maxi a lovely comfortable car but eventually sold it and bought a Ford Capri and months later i was following my old Maxi along a main road its a strange feeling , but i after several years owning my first Capri was being pestered by a guy at work who wanted it i had had her 3 years and thought after a while ok as the MOT was coming up anyway the guy bought it like a flash he didnt want it himself he seems to have had someone lined up to buy it , but he put it into the Mot and it failed big time and cost a small fortune to pass , but when the new owner said i hasd cheated him and wanted some money all i said was it looks like i sold it just at the right time, i wasnt being nasty to him had he been using the car i would have helped a bit but it used his profit , besides i have bought a few well prepared cars with problems waiting to be fixed ,

My driving started at the age of three or four my mother told me. I have found pictures of my cars on the net as I never did take many pictures of my cars and if I did they did not turn out any good or I have lost them. :emotic20:

So for now all I can say is your pictures and stories were great to see and read.

Oh Honeybee ... I'm hoping you find the cutest little happy yellow or pale aqua VW 'bug' ... and who knows, maybe it will even be a convertible! And just think, you can even keep fresh flowers in the little vase they created on the dash board! flower

Yes, Nordog, please do find similar vehicles to what you had on the internet! I'll have to do something similar as you and Skip as how odd to think back that I took so, so few photos - drat!

Now that 'Thing' is absolutely wonderful, Skip - your lovely Lynn must have had a wonderful time driving hers - especially with the soft top!! (I feel the same way about some of my cars and could kick myself for not keeping them!).

Then when I turned 16 & got a full license---me dad said---you are going to buy a car for you & your mother to both use--( yup he was like that--once he made me buy a tool set from sears & I had to make payments---A lesson I suppose as he never used them)
Googled Image---but same color---notice the dice hanging from the mirror--I had those. Then I proceeded to make a hot rod of sorts with the car---had the front end lowered ( raked ) & installed Glass packs mufflers ( loud ) & a floor shifter ---Made it my self. Mum got her own car soon after that. Oh I was a bad boy I tell ya---My very first ticket was for Drag racing on a public road. I then got many more tickets---license suspended & then revoked later on.

Great fun to see your first bike, Skip and I bet that one has very special memories for you. I didn't smile when I read your 'bigger and faster' bike purchase was a mini-nightmare and broke down more than it ran, though - nope, I swear some bikes and cars and simply 'jinxed'!

'Interesting lessons' that your Dad gave you ... but I'm still smiling reading that soon after your turned your car into a hot rod, your Mom got her own (and as for your naughty behaviour re drag racing, etc - well, none of us were angels when we were teenagers - grin). Really, really love your car and I bet it was great having the talent to be able to convert it to what you wanted, too!

Thanks so much for adding these images and comments about your 'putt putts' - really enjoying it!

Gosh, I hope I don't bore everyone silly but adding all of these, but what a lot of memories they've brought back.

And gosh, when I think of all the cars we've had - yikes! I blame part of it on for so many years needing two cars to get to and from work but still, a huge yikes! (Most of these photos came from the internet as I so rarely took photos back then).

Got my very first car in 1965 (please forgive me if I've placed this somewhere earlier) was a used 1959 Pontiac Parissiene V8 - 2 door hardtop. I loved this car ... huge, comfy, 3 ashtrays in the front alone and dusty pink brocade interior to match the exterior colour. Only drawback was it took forever to wash and wax and one had to be careful when working around the sharp 'fins'. And if one can parallel park this car, one can park anything!
(And yes, my actual car was pink!).
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1959_m10

My next was a soft blue 1966 Chevy Impala 2-door with a V8 .... this is the one I drove in by myself from Vancouver to Toronto when I moved there. It sadly fell off a cliff at Jack Ass Pass in the Fraser Canyon while heading back for a visit - and suspect it may still be there, just a sad rusted hulk.
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1966_c10

So replaced it with a 1966 Mustang convertible, standard transmission ... great fun to zip around in but a pain in the bum to get the top up and down and sold it when I moved from Toronto and fly back to Vancouver.
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1966_m10

Next was a dark green Fiat Spider convertible, standard transmission - loved this zippy little thing but sadly it turned itself over one day and totaled itself.
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1966_f10

And when I'd moved to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, it was a very used red Austin Cambridge wagon that I bought. Loved this little thing, even though I had to learn to double-clutch it - and it was faithful to the end, poor thing. (The trip from Yellowknife out to civilization over the ice-road did it in, sadly).
This is the closest image I could find - but mine was dull battered red, red cracked leather seats and, of course, the steering wheel was on the 'right' side - smile).
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 Old_au10

Oops, nearly forgot this one ... when I moved to Kamloops, was given a Morgan. Hated every single thing about this car. Parts and serving were vitually impossible, drafty, noisy, steering so stiff it felt like my arm were coming out of the sockets. Got rid of it to a guy who had the deluded idea that these were great cars ... mine was similar to this except red.
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1967_m10

... and got a happy yellow 1970 Dodge Challenger.
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1970_d10

When I lived in Stewart (by border and Hyder Alaska), there was no road in or out then and one simply walked everywhere in the small town and, in the winter, used Snowmobiles.

And when my beloved Glen and I found each other, two cars were the 'norm' for several years ...

Glen had a 1971 Datson 1200 - 2 door (bright gold)
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 Glen_s10

And I had a 1971 Ford Capri in dark gold/yellow (the gas gauge never worked properly and made for a near-constant low level anxiety about running out of gas if someone else had been driving it too).
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1971_f10

In 1974, Glen got a blue 1974 Dodge Dart.
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1974_d10

In 1975, I'd been driving a city bus for a year and realized tiny cars had finally realized that tiny cars had little chance against big vehicles in an accident - so I bought one of the first AMC Pacers sold in Vancouver and loved it! It had a built in roll-bar and 3" steel plates running down both doors for safety (important to me when having wee ones zipping around in the car with me) - plus their warranty covered everything - , right down to the tiny interior light bulbs. So comfy and glass everywhere (took no time at all to wash the car each week but cleaning all the glass took forever - grin).
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 Pacer_10

1976, Glen got a Triumph TR6. This chocolate brown car was such fun - sadly, he let his brother drive it. Add one drunk brother and friend = two in hospital and car totaled two months later.
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1976_g10

1978 - I got a Chevrolet Camaro ... white (same as in image) but mine had a sun roof - big V8 in it and how I loved this car. By now we'd moved out of the city and it was an hours drive each way to work, super early in the morning and not getting home until well after 6pm. I'd put the windows down and the stereo up and even when it was snowing hard, it handled like a dream. (Got my first and only speeding ticket driving this car).
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1975_c10

And in 1978, Glen got a chocolate brown Ford Thunderbird with a T-bar roof. A great family car - could load all the kids in it and it was what we called 'our boat' - smile. The headlights had covers though and poor Glen got his finger pinched badly by one when it had stuck and he was trying to fix it - ouch! - and must admit taking the glass roof pieces in and out was a bit of a pain.
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1978_g10

By now we'd finally been able to get similar shifts at work so could have just one family car and we purchased a 1981 Buick Skylark DLXL.

This new car was a disaster from day one ... never even got it off the dealer's lot before we discovered it literally had no second gear and the defrosters and rear electric windows didn't work.

Finally picked it up a week later only to discover half way home it's stabilizer bar fall off. Yup, literally. Waited until the following Saturday and toodled back to the Dealership and politely asked to exchange it for another identical brand new car. He said no. I sweetly reminded him that his show room had lots of people looking at cars and nary a one of them would be pleased to know about my 'lemon', to say nothing that I would be quite capable of telling every single 1,400 transit drivers about my woe. Could see he was still hesitating so (and this is when I could feel Glen cringing), I, still very sweetly, told him that fine, I'd simply start screaming on the top of my lungs. He told us to go out back and choose another replacement car. (Evil little grin!).

Ours was the same as this but with a vinyl roof (a pain to clean, unfortunately).
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 Skylar10

In 1984 we bought a Honda Civic S Hatchback with sun roof - and this little zippy 5 speed car was great fun to drive and oddly enough, plenty big enough in the back seat for 3 girls. Sadly, the sun roof leaked and the Dealership couldn't for the life of them find where it was leaking from. Finally, when Glen and I got tired of getting in the car after work on a rainy day and the first time we had to break a wave of water would come from the floor of the back seat over into the front, we decided enough was enough and sold it.
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1984_h10

Next was an 2-tone silver 1988 Ford Escort LX Wagon ... it did the job, kids and school and errands but surely wasn't a lot of fun to drive.
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1988_o10

1992, our girls were flapping their little wings in freedom and Glen had been admiring the new Mazda Precidias shortly before his first massive heart attack - and so, right after he got out of the hospital (still carrying his little red 'heart' pillow against his chest), got him a Precidia MX3- V6 with a 5 speed transmission (could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 8.4 seconds, and could travel a quarter mile in 16.4 seconds - not that we ever did this, of course!).

This is the same, except ours was 'champagne' coloured.
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1992_m10

1995, one of our girls became critically ill and the tiny Precidia had to be traded for a far more sensible family car once again - this time a 'champagne' colour 4-door sedan Nissan Ultima with a vinyl roof.
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1995_n10

1999, had to get an even bigger vehicle - this time a white Chrysler Grand Caravan (it was a pig on gas but served it's purpose).
Cars/Vans/Bikes etc. Past and Present. - Page 3 1999_c10

2003 - We bought our last car, a dark green Kia Sorento LX and luckily we still love it. It's far nicer to drive than the huge Caravan was, yet sturdy enough to take the magic yellow scooter and it's lift etc.

Aah yes, life simply wouldn't be 'normal' if we didn't have some lemons along the way, Doug.

Think that must be a sign we've had 'too many' cars when both of us had to struggle to remember them all - huge grin! Looking forward to seeing your past ones too.

I thought I had owned a lot of cars Mara but you nearly beat me, trouble being I can't remember some of them as they didn't last long enough to be worth remembering in at least two cases. They were just umpteenth owner rust buckets, bought as a fill in while looking for something better. I do remember one of those, it was an Austin 1300, they were a terrible car any way but I bought it for about £60, as a spares or repair deal, all it needed was something replacing and for the life of me cannot remember what, but it was covered in dents and rusty patches. It got me to work in the morning and home again at night, and that was all that mattered then.

Two weeks after I graduated from high school I moved out of my parents house. My dad told me I had to get a job----well now I had worked part time all the years I went to high school at the same drug store---steady---& I thought I might take some time off. ( the drug store had told me that once I graduated they would no longer employ me. They did offer to loan me money to go to collage to become a pharmacist---I was not interested in that.
OK --nough of that--this is posed to be bout cars etc.
Traded the 1955 Chevy for a 53 mercury & got some cash to boot---kinda looked like the one below--only it was maroon. I also got married at this time. (used)

Such lovely memories for you here Skip, and really nice cars too, it's interesting as well to hear you were a fireman, were you in that job for a while, well done to you and all who work in these services, my full respect goes out to you all.

I remember my dad saying he bought a motor bike similar when he was a young man and as soon as his mum saw it she said 'Take that back', he managed some how to change her mind and he had many lovely bike rides all around.

Hi Tanooma---
I was a fireman for 6 years---but soon got tired of it----After my divorce--I did not want to spend 14 more years to retire,at the same job--live in the same city etc.. I learned how to become a carpenter while working there-----that was my ticket to a free'r lifestyle----free to go anywhere & get a job & free to take very long vacations---I never regretted quiting that job.
I think your dad & I would get along fine----"he had many lovely bike rides all around." Maybe when I win the lottery I could meet him ( & you & others too )

Quite a time there Skip and good camaraderie amongst you all there too I expect, also with all you learned there it has helped a lot in all you have been able to do, like the building work etc, so well done and such a lovely place you live in, really nice, infact a dream for many.

My dad bought a motor bike and sidecar, mum and I went in it but when we finally came out I was covered in bruises, hehe, my mum gripped on to me for grim death, she no likey, so eventually dad sold it and bought a car.
I will buy double lottery tickets this week then. Very Happy

I'm glad I popped in here as I'm not really into cars with not being a driver but instead I am reading such an interesting account of your life so far Skip.

I can understand the need for freedom and being able to do your own thing.

Some folk stick at the same job for years, often because they have to but that would kill me. The longest job I've had is marriage Very Happy

Outside work, offices etc. the longest I could stick was 2 years then I wanted to move on.
